Corrosion inhibitor forms a protective film on metal. That film only holds while concentration stays inside the protection band – and in a working loop, make-up and blowdown are always pushing it out.
The Operating Reality
Carbon steel, copper and mixed-metallurgy loops dose inhibitor continuously; the dose must rise with make-up rate and be corrected after blowdown events.
Why It Matters
With manual dosing, concentration saw-tooths: protected just after the dose, exposed before the next one. Corrosion happens in the troughs, which is why automated feed is reported to improve anti-corrosion performance substantially.
How It Works in Practice
- Dose tracks live conductivity and make-up signal rather than a fixed timer.
- Metering accuracy of ±0.5% keeps low inhibitor doses repeatable.
- Wetted parts in 316L and compatible polymers suit aggressive make-up water.
Selection Checklist
- Choose the control signal (pH, ORP, conductivity or flow-proportional) before sizing equipment.
- Size the metering pump to the working dose with margin, not to peak demand.
- Confirm wetted-part compatibility for every chemical to be fed.
- Require leak detection, dry-running protection and containment in the installation.
- Plan integration with PLC, DCS or remote telemetry from the start.
