Most water-cooled chillers already in service can accept an automatic tube cleaning system without tube modification or chiller replacement. This guide explains how an ATCS retrofit for existing chillers is specified, installed and commissioned — and what information your supplier needs to quote accurately.
Which Chillers Can Be Retrofitted?
| Chiller type | Retrofit fit |
|---|---|
| Centrifugal | Yes — standard fit |
| Screw / reciprocating | Yes |
| Lithium bromide absorption | Yes — absorber + condenser bundles |
| Brands | Trane, Carrier, York, Mitsubishi, Hitachi, Daikin and others |
Information Needed for a Retrofit Quote
- Tube data: OD, wall thickness, length, quantity, material (copper, Cu-Ni, SS, titanium).
- Pass arrangement: number of passes and flow direction.
- Chiller data: brand, model, nominal capacity (RT), cooling-water flow rate.
- Water side: source (tower, seawater, TSE), make-up quality, existing treatment.
- Space: available footprint near the condenser water inlet/outlet for the injection and collection chambers.
Installation Steps
Step 1 — Survey. Engineer reviews tube data and plant-room layout (remote or on-site).
Step 2 — Specification. Ball type/size and quantity, materials (SS316L for seawater), PLC control scope are fixed.
Step 3 — Factory build. Skid, injection/recovery chambers, pump set and controller assembled and tested before shipment.
Step 4 — Installation. Tie-in to condenser water piping during a scheduled window — typically 1–2 days per chiller. No drilling or modification of condenser tubes.
Step 5 — Commissioning. Ball circulation verified, cycle programming set, alarms tested.
Step 6 — Integration. Status and faults reported to BMS/DCIM via BACnet/IP or Modbus TCP (see BMS & DCIM integration).
What Retrofit Does NOT Involve
- No refrigerant circuit work — the system lives entirely on the cooling-water side.
- No tube cutting, drilling or lining.
- No permanent chiller outage — cleaning runs online after commissioning.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does an ATCS retrofit take?
Typically 1–2 days of tie-in work per chiller during a scheduled window; the cleaning system then operates online.
Can ATCS be added to an old chiller?
In most cases yes — the requirement is a sound condenser tube bundle and space for the injection/recovery chambers. Tube condition is confirmed during the survey.
Do condenser tubes need modification?
No. Retrofit requires no tube drilling, cutting or lining; balls travel through the existing tubes.
