Automatic Tube Cleaning Balls System — What It Is

An automatic condenser tube cleaning system (ATCS) keeps condenser and heat-exchanger tubes clean while the unit keeps running. Specially sized sponge rubber balls are injected into the cooling water, carried through every tube by the flow, and collected again at the outlet — automatically, on a PLC-controlled cycle.

The result: fouling, biofilm and scale never get the chance to build up, heat transfer stays near design level, and energy consumption stops creeping up. We manufacture the complete system — ball collector, ball injection unit, EPDM sponge balls and PLC control panel — at our Shenzhen factory, and custom-engineer each order to the customer’s condenser.

Why Facilities Lose Efficiency — and What ATCS Does About It

Cooling water carries suspended solids, minerals and micro-organisms. Inside a condenser tube, they deposit as:

  • Scaling — calcium and silica deposits, common with hard or brackish water
  • Biofilm — biological slime, the fastest-growing fouling in warm climates
  • Silt and debris — mud, sand and marine growth in open-loop systems

Even a 0.5 mm deposit can cut heat transfer by 30%. Chiller COP drops, the compressor draws more power, and capacity fades exactly when you need it most.

Protect Assets & Infrastructure

Constant fouling accelerates tube erosion and corrosion. ATCS keeps tube walls clean and protects the condenser circuit.

Ensure Cooling Performance

Clean tubes reject heat at the design rate. Chillers deliver rated capacity, plants hold efficiency numbers, and high-pressure trips disappear.

Optimize Operational Efficiency

With heat transfer restored, compressor load drops. Typical energy savings of 10-30% pay back the system in 12-24 months.

Applications of Automatic Condenser Tube Cleaning Systems

  • Power generation condenser cleaning
  • HVAC chiller optimization in commercial and residential buildings
  • District cooling plant efficiency
  • Data center chiller reliability
  • Marine and vessel engine cooling
  • Oil & gas and petrochemical heat exchangers
  • Desalination plant condensers (seawater-grade materials)

Components of Our ATCS

1. Ball Collector & Strainer

Installed on the condenser outlet, it captures balls after they pass through tubes and returns them to the injection loop. Sizes from DN65 to DN600, in carbon steel, 316L or duplex stainless steel.

2. Ball Injection System

Feeds the correct number of balls into the condenser inlet at the programmed interval, driven by a pump or differential-pressure mechanism. Fully automatic.

3. EPDM Sponge Cleaning Balls

1-2 mm larger than the tube ID, they compress and wipe the full tube circumference. EPDM resists oil, heat up to 110°C and a wide pH range. Available 12-45 mm.

4. Automated PLC Control Panel

Runs the cleaning cycle, tracks ball losses and reports status. Communicates with BMS or SCADA via Modbus RTU/TCP or BACnet. IP65 enclosure as standard.

How Automatic Condenser Tube Cleaning Balls Work

  1. The PLC starts the injection cycle at the programmed time (typically 2-4 times per day).
  2. Sponge balls enter the condenser inlet water and travel with the flow.
  3. Each ball passes through a condenser tube, compressing to the bore and wiping scale, biofilm and silt off the wall.
  4. The collector at the outlet recovers every ball and returns it to the injection unit.
  5. The system repeats automatically — 24/7, with the unit running at full load.

How to Select the Right ATCS for Your Plant

1. Chiller & Condenser Specs

Send us the condenser model, tube count, tube inner diameter and length. Ball size is calculated from tube ID; collector size from flow and piping.

2. Water Quality & Fouling Type

Hard water, seawater, brackish or closed loop? The fouling type decides ball hardness, material grade and cleaning frequency.

3. Operational Parameters

Flow rate, pressure and temperature determine pump sizing, collector rating and material selection.

4. Integration Requirements

If you need BMS/SCADA visibility, we supply the PLC with Modbus/BACnet gateway — or link to your existing controller.

5. Material Needs

Standard carbon steel for fresh water; 316L or duplex for seawater and aggressive chemical environments.

Benefits of Installing an ATCS

Maximized energy efficiency

Restore heat transfer to design level, cut compressor energy use 10-30%.

Consistent cooling performance

The condenser delivers rated capacity 24/7, even in peak season.

Extended equipment life

No corrosion-accelerating deposits, less tube wear.

Reduced maintenance & downtime

Eliminate manual brushing and chemical descaling; zero cleaning shutdowns.

Environmentally friendly

No cleaning chemicals, lower carbon footprint per ton of cooling.

Improved operational safety

No operators inside tube bundles, no chemical handling.

FAQs — Automatic Condenser Tube Cleaning Systems

Fouling makes heat transfer worse, so the compressor works harder. By keeping tubes clean continuously, an ATCS restores heat transfer to near design level. Facilities typically report 10-30% energy savings on the cooling system, and a payback of 12-24 months.

Yes, for water-cooled shell-and-tube condensers and heat exchangers with accessible tube bundles, in sizes from small packaged chillers to large power plant condensers. Ball size and collector are matched to your tube diameter and flow.

EPDM sponge balls typically last 4-8 weeks of continuous use, depending on water quality and cleaning frequency. They are inexpensive and supplied in bulk; the PLC alerts you when ball loss needs topping up.

No. The collector and injection unit are fitted to the existing condenser water piping. Most installations are completed within one day, with the condenser running normally before and after.

Yes. Our PLC control panel supports Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP and BACnet, so cleaning status, cycles and alarms appear on your existing BMS or SCADA screens.

ATCS removes soft fouling continuously: biofilm, silt, mud and soft scale. For hard mineral scale already deposited, we recommend a one-off cleaning first, then the ATCS keeps it from returning.

Yes. We supply 316L stainless steel, duplex stainless steel and GRP-lined components specifically for seawater and coastal installations. Confirm your water chemistry when requesting a quote.

Manual cleaning means shutdown, labour and tube damage risk; chemical cleaning means downtime, corrosion risk and disposal cost. ATCS cleans online, automatically, with no chemicals — so you never pay the downtime bill again.

With 10-30% cooling energy savings, most customers recover the investment in 12-24 months. In large power and district cooling plants, payback is often faster.

We provide installation drawings, remote commissioning support and spare parts from stock. For projects in Southeast Asia and the Middle East, we can also arrange on-site supervision.
