Magnetic vs Centrifugal Chiller: Fouling Impact Compared

Different compressor types run their condensers under different profiles, and fouling hits them a little differently — but the energy law is the same for all: *~4% of capacity lost per 1°C of approach-temperature rise.*

Centrifugal Chillers

Centrifugal machines are common in large plants with steady, high load. Their condensers run at sustained pressure and temperature, so fouling produces a steady, predictable capacity loss that compounds over the run.

Magnetic (Magnetic-Bearing / Oil-Free) Chillers

Oil-free, magnetic-bearing chillers are exceptionally efficient, especially at part load — but that efficiency advantage lives in a narrow, high-efficiency band. *Fouling narrows or erases the part-load edge faster* than on a centrifugal, because the machine has less margin to give up before efficiency drops.

Common Defense

Both benefit from an *Automatic Tube Cleaning System sized to the condenser (HyApexFlow covers DN100-500, verified against 18 major OEMs*). For magnetic-bearing units in particular, protecting the clean-baseline approach temperature preserves the very efficiency they were bought for.
