Online Tube Cleaning for Chillers: How It Works Without Shutdown
Online tube cleaning for chillers is exactly what it sounds like: cleaning the condenser tubes while the chiller keeps running. For 24/7 plants — hospitals, data centers, district cooling — shutdown cleaning is not an option. This article explains how online cleaning works and why it protects efficiency.
What Is Online Tube Cleaning?
Online (or “continuous”) tube cleaning uses an automated ball system to pass soft cleaning balls through the condenser tubes on a repeating cycle. The balls are collected, re-launched, and the process repeats without ever taking the chiller offline. This is the defining feature of an ATCS.
Online vs Offline Cleaning
Offline cleaning means draining, rodding, or brushing the tubes during a planned shutdown — lost cooling, labor cost, and tube-scoring risk, with fouling returning in weeks. Online cleaning eliminates the shutdown entirely and keeps approach temperature flat, so the chiller operates at its design point continuously.
The Online Cleaning Cycle
A microcomputer sets the cleaning frequency based on load and water quality. On each cycle, balls are released from the collector, swept through the tubes by the cooling-water flow, captured at the recovery strainer, and returned. Ball size is matched to the tube ID (0.1 mm precision); the system includes a 1.5 mm inlet strainer and a differential-pressure guard that halts operation if flow drops below setpoint.
The Efficiency Payoff
Because the tubes stay near new-condition, approach-temperature rise is held to ≤ 0.3±0.1°C and fouling-driven capacity loss (≈4% per 1°C) is avoided. Field data shows 15–35% recovery of the fouling-related energy penalty, with a representative 1260 RT plant saving about 79,560 RMB per year.
Implementation: WB vs TB6
New chillers can take the WB factory-integrated type (no external power, matched to the unit). Existing plants use the TB6 pipe-integrated type, field-installed on DN100–DN500 piping with its own control power (≤0.2 kW).
FAQ
What is the difference between online and offline tube cleaning?
Offline stops the chiller to brush or rod the tubes; online runs the cleaning cycle while the chiller operates, with no shutdown and no fouling rebound.
Can online cleaning run while the chiller is operating?
Yes — that is the entire point of an ATCS. The ball cycle runs on the cooling-water flow and a microcomputer timer, fully online.
How often does online cleaning cycle?
Frequency is programmable based on load and water quality; many plants run several cycles per day. The controller also offers RS485 for remote scheduling.
