Representative application scenario based on typical project data.
Project Snapshot
A colocation data center in Southeast Asia runs an N+1 chiller plant of centrifugal chillers up to ~1250 RT each, supporting IT loads on a 24/7 basis. With power being the single largest operating cost, even a fraction of a percent of PUE translates into material annual spend.
The Challenge
- Condenser end-difference drifted toward ~2.8°C in the hot season; per the fouling rule each 1°C raises compressor work by ~4%, so the plant was giving up cooling efficiency exactly when ambient heat was highest.
- Any chiller shutdown for manual brush cleaning conflicts with N+1 redundancy margins and change-control windows.
- Water-side fouling also stresses the cooling towers and raises pump head.
Solution
An automatic tube cleaning system (ATCS) was fitted to the condenser of each online chiller, using sponge balls (DN100–500 compatible, 0.1 mm oversize) that circulate every cycle with no shutdown. Operation is coordinated with the plant’s existing chiller sequencing so cleaning runs only on online units.
Representative Results
- Condenser end-difference held around ~1.1°C versus the prior ~2.8°C summer drift.
- Estimated ~7% reduction in chiller electricity use, contributing directly to a lower facility PUE.
- No planned shutdowns for tube cleaning since commissioning — redundancy margins preserved.
- Reduced fouling stress on cooling towers and pumps.
Why It Matters for Data Centers
In a data center, cooling is a top power draw and PUE is a board-level metric. Continuous condenser cleaning converts a hidden efficiency leak into a controlled, automatic process that compounds across every operating hour.
