Sponge Rubber Cleaning Balls for Online Condenser Tube Cleaning

The cleaning ball is the working element of every online tube-cleaning system. Here’s what it removes, how it works, and why the right ball — and the right material — decides your results.

The Core Component of Continuous Cleaning

Sponge rubber cleaning balls are specially engineered to continuously remove soft deposits from condenser tubes during normal plant operation. Acting as the cleaning element inside an online condenser tube cleaning system, they travel through the tubes with the cooling-water flow and gently wipe away fouling before it accumulates.

Properly selected cleaning balls help maintain heat-transfer efficiency, reduce energy consumption, and extend condenser service life — which is exactly why they sit at the heart of every HYATCS installation.

How Sponge Cleaning Balls Work

During operation, cleaning balls are injected into the cooling-water stream and carried through the condenser tubes by the circulating water. As each ball passes through a tube, its elastic sponge structure lightly compresses against the inner wall and removes soft deposits before they harden.

Closed loop: after passing through the condenser, the balls are collected at the outlet and returned to the injection unit to begin another cycle — automatically, without interrupting plant operation.

What the Balls Remove

Online ball cleaning is designed for the soft, recurring deposits that cooling water constantly introduces. The balls typically handle:

Biofouling

Microbial and biological growth on the tube wall.

Algae growth

Photosynthetic slime in open cooling loops.

Slime & mud

Organic slime and suspended sediment.

Soft scale

Early, unhardened mineral deposits.

Organic matter

Decomposed organics carried by intake water.

Fine sediment

Mud and silt kept from settling.

Note on hard scale: online cleaning prevents scale and removes soft deposits. Existing hardened scale should be cleared before commissioning so the balls maintain a clean baseline.

Standard Rubber vs Nano-Silicone Balls

HYATCS uses nano-silicone balls — a core upgrade that cleans where ordinary rubber balls cannot. The difference is measurable:

Specification Standard rubber balls HYATCS nano-silicone
Temperature range 0–80°C 0–200°C
Sizing precision 1–2 mm 0.1 mm
Tube compatibility Smooth tubes Scrubs internal-thread tubes via mesh surface
Service life Limited ~3000 run-hours
Density Fixed Customizable per site

Sizing & Quantity

Ball diameter is set mainly by tube internal diameter and operating conditions. A practical guide:

  • 3/4″ tube → 16 mm ball
  • 1″ tube → 22 mm ball
  • Quantity → 30–50% of the one-way tube count

Materials can be specified for freshwater, seawater, and special environments — important for the seawater and desalination plants that are among the most common installations.

Service Life & Replacement

Balls circulate continuously until normal wear requires replacement — typically after ~3000 run-hours or one cooling season, or when worn to the gauge limit. Because they’re a consumable, they create a steady, recurring spare-parts requirement (a plus for service partners — see our product page).

FAQ: Sponge Rubber Cleaning Balls

How does rubber ball descaling technology clean condenser tubes?

Sponge rubber balls are injected into the cooling-water stream and carried through the condenser tubes by the circulating water. Each ball compresses lightly against the tube wall and wipes away soft deposits before they harden, then is collected at the outlet and returned to the injection unit. The loop runs continuously, so tubes stay clean without shutting the chiller down.

What is the difference between standard rubber balls and nano-silicone balls?

Temperature range: standard rubber 0-80 degrees C versus HYATCS nano-silicone 0-200 degrees C. Sizing precision: 1-2 mm versus 0.1 mm. Tube compatibility: standard balls suit smooth tubes, while nano-silicone mesh-surface balls also scrub internal-thread tubes. Typical service life is around 3000 run-hours, and density can be customised per site.

Can online ball cleaning remove hardened scale?

No. Online ball cleaning removes soft, recurring deposits – biofouling, algae, slime, mud, soft scale and fine sediment – and prevents new scale from forming. Existing hardened scale must be removed before commissioning so the balls start from a clean baseline.

What ball size and quantity does a condenser need?

Ball diameter follows tube internal diameter: a 3/4 inch tube takes a 16 mm ball and a 1 inch tube takes a 22 mm ball. Charge quantity is 30-50 percent of the one-way tube count. Material can be specified for freshwater, seawater and special environments.
