How an Automatic Chemical Dosing System Works

An automatic dosing system is a closed control loop: it measures the water, decides what the water needs, and meters that amount with a pump accurate enough for the dose to mean something.

The Operating Reality

A skid comprising chemical tanks, metering pumps, instrumentation, a controller and safety devices, connected to a circulating water line and to the plant control system.

Why It Matters

Manual dosing is open-loop: someone estimates a dose and applies it, and nobody measures whether it was right until the next test. Closing that loop is what makes the dose repeatable.

How It Works in Practice

  • Measure: pH, ORP, conductivity and flow sensors report the live state of the water.
  • Decide: an AI decision engine compares readings to setpoints, with control error under ±5%, and learns the water-quality pattern of the loop over time.
  • Meter: imported plunger pumps deliver the dose at ±0.5% accuracy (national standard ±3%), with pulse rates above 5000 per minute.
  • Protect: a leak alarm sounds within 2 seconds, dry-running protection stops the pump on an empty tank, and alarms are reported onward.
  • Integrate: the skid talks to PLC, DCS or GPRS telemetry, so dose and status appear in the control room.

Selection Checklist

  • Choose the control signal (pH, ORP, conductivity or flow-proportional) before sizing equipment.
  • Size the metering pump to the working dose with margin, not to peak demand.
  • Confirm wetted-part compatibility for every chemical to be fed.
  • Require leak detection, dry-running protection and containment in the installation.
  • Plan integration with PLC, DCS or remote telemetry from the start.
