Legionella Control in Middle East Cooling Towers

Legionella control in most climates is a seasonal task. Across the Gulf it is not: tower water spends most of the year inside the 25-45 C range where the organism multiplies fastest.

The Operating Reality

Cooling towers across Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain recirculate warm water in sustained hot weather, with make-up from desalination, groundwater or blended sources.

Why It Matters Here

Biofilm is both a heat-transfer problem and a hygiene problem. It insulates heat transfer far more than a comparable mineral scale layer, and it shelters organisms from biocide. Control measures therefore have to run continuously rather than seasonally.

Local Conditions That Drive Fouling

  • Ambient conditions keep tower water in the 25-45 C growth window for most of the year, removing the seasonal reset other regions rely on.
  • Desalination and groundwater make-up bring different chemistry, so biocide and inhibitor programmes need to be tuned to the actual water source.
  • Systems should combine continuous tube cleaning, controlled biocide rotation, and monitoring rather than relying on biocide alone.

How Automatic Tube Cleaning (ATCS) Fits

  • Sponge balls (DN100-500 compatible, 0.1 mm oversize) circulate every chiller cycle, sweeping tubes with no shutdown.
  • End-difference is held near ~1.2 °C instead of drifting to 3 °C+, avoiding the ~4% per 1 °C compressor penalty.
  • Continuous sweeping removes the biofilm layer (up to ~300× more insulating than a clean tube) rather than reacting after a deposit forms.
  • Systems are sized to tube count and metallurgy — titanium, copper-nickel, stainless and carbon steel all supported.
