Automatic Tube Cleaning for Steel Plant Chillers & Turbine Condensers

Steel plants run air-compressor, furnace and rolling-mill cooling around the clock, often beside high airborne dust and scale. Condenser fouling here cuts turbine output and raises kWh per ton.

The Operating Reality

A typical integrated steelworks cools compressor stations, hydraulic oil and process water through shell-and-tube exchangers and centrifugal chillers. Ambient dust loads the cooling tower basin, accelerating silt and biofilm in condenser tubes.

Why Fouling Hurts Here

End-difference creep of ~1°C raises compressor/turbine work by ~4%; across a 1200–2000 RT cooling load the lost energy is measured in hundreds of thousands of kWh per year.

How Automatic Tube Cleaning (ATCS) Fits

  • Sponge balls (DN100–500 compatible, 0.1 mm oversize) circulate every chiller cycle, sweeping tubes with no shutdown.
  • End-difference is held near ~1.2°C instead of drifting to 3°C+, keeping compressor work in check (each 1°C of end-difference adds ~4% compressor load).
  • Continuous sweeping prevents the biofilm layer (up to ~300× more insulating than clean tube) that manual schedules miss.
  • Systems are sized to tube count and metallurgy — titanium, copper-nickel, stainless and carbon steel all supported.

Compliance & Standards

For new Chinese industrial and commercial cooling projects, online/automatic condenser cleaning aligns with GB/T 51357-2019 guidance that such measures be considered for energy-efficient cooling design.
