ATCS for Qatar’s Oil, Gas and District Cooling

Qatar runs two cooling problems at once: process duty in oil and gas, and comfort cooling for a city that is nearly always under load. Both depend on the same cold water being available.

The Operating Reality

Gas processing and petrochemical sites cool compressors, intercoolers and process exchangers, while district cooling serves the built city. Both use cooling towers under near-zero rainfall, so there is no wet season to reset the system.

Why It Matters Here

With no rain to flush the system, dissolved solids concentrate steadily and fouling is cumulative. End-difference creep of about 1 C adds roughly 4% compressor work, and a process upset caused by a fouling-driven capacity loss is far more costly than the energy itself.

Local Conditions That Drive Fouling

  • Near-zero rainfall means make-up is entirely evaporative loss, so cycles of concentration stay high and scale risk accumulates.
  • Process duty and comfort duty share the same water discipline, so a fouled exchanger affects both at once.
  • Fire-area and process constraints make planned manual cleaning outages hard to schedule, which favours continuous online cleaning.

How Automatic Tube Cleaning (ATCS) Fits

  • Sponge balls (DN100-500 compatible, 0.1 mm oversize) circulate every chiller cycle, sweeping tubes with no shutdown.
  • End-difference is held near ~1.2 °C instead of drifting to 3 °C+, avoiding the ~4% per 1 °C compressor penalty.
  • Continuous sweeping removes the biofilm layer (up to ~300× more insulating than a clean tube) rather than reacting after a deposit forms.
  • Systems are sized to tube count and metallurgy — titanium, copper-nickel, stainless and carbon steel all supported.
