HVAC Water Treatment: Chemical Dosing vs Non-Chemical Cleaning
When specifying HVAC water treatment, the first fork in the road is chemical vs non-chemical. Both have a place — the right answer depends on your water chemistry, discharge limits, and how much manual maintenance you can absorb.
Chemical Dosing
A dosing system adds inhibitors and biocides to the loop. *Pros: broad control of scale, corrosion, and biology across the whole circuit. Cons:* ongoing chemical cost, storage and handling, and discharge/effluent limits that tighten in many jurisdictions.
Non-Chemical (Mechanical) Cleaning
An *Automatic Tube Cleaning System (ATCS) physically scrubs condenser tubes on a cycle with the chiller online. Pros: no chemical consumption or discharge trade-off, fully automatic, protects chiller COP continuously. Cons:* it targets the condenser tubes specifically, so open-loop microbiology still needs separate control (e.g., tower-side biocide).
The Practical Stack
Most robust plants run a *hybrid*: dosing (or at least tower biocide) for loop chemistry, plus ATCS for the condenser where the energy penalty is largest. Each 1°C of avoided approach-temperature rise recovers ~4% of chiller capacity — so keeping the condenser clean is where the biggest, most reliable energy win sits.
