Condenser Tube Cleaning for Indonesia’s Tropical Plants

There is no off-season in most of Indonesia. Air stays warm and humid through the year, so a cooling plant runs inside the biofilm growth window from January to December.

The Operating Reality

A typical plant or building runs centrifugal chillers on cooling towers with make-up drawn from a river, reservoir or deep well. Warm return water, high humidity and continuous operation keep the growth window open all year.

Why It Matters Here

End-difference creep of about 1 C adds roughly 4% compressor work, and a biofilm layer can be up to 300 times more insulating than a clean tube. In a climate with no cold break, fouling is a permanent load rather than a seasonal one.

Local Conditions That Drive Fouling

  • Cooling towers commonly run at 3-5 cycles of concentration, which keeps inhibitor dose sensitive to blowdown and make-up changes.
  • River or reservoir make-up carries silt and organics that accelerate both scaling and biofilm growth.
  • High ambient humidity leaves little margin on approach temperature before capacity is lost.

How Automatic Tube Cleaning (ATCS) Fits

  • Sponge balls (DN100-500 compatible, 0.1 mm oversize) circulate every chiller cycle, sweeping tubes with no shutdown.
  • End-difference is held near ~1.2 °C instead of drifting to 3 °C+, avoiding the ~4% per 1 °C compressor penalty.
  • Continuous sweeping removes the biofilm layer (up to ~300× more insulating than a clean tube) rather than reacting after a deposit forms.
  • Systems are sized to tube count and metallurgy — titanium, copper-nickel, stainless and carbon steel all supported.
